Happy New Year, Bruins.

The final results of the polls have us heading to the Beautiful Russian River Area (Monte Rio and Guerneville to be specific) August 2nd through the 5th. I nearly have a base camp nailed down (and it looks like it’s me and the Routts, and, depending on which house we end up with, some other folks).

Just to get you thinking, while we will be staying in the redwoods, there are many, many wineries close by. Here’s a link to the Russian River Wine Road website. Lots of excellent options there.

While I might be able to give you advice on wineries, I have no idea about the local golf course, Northwood, but I can read that it’s a nine hole affair right on the river, next to the Bohemian Grove. When I took a look at the score card, it looks like folks just play the course twice to get in 18 holes.

There are some renowned breweries not too far away (Russian River and bear republic  for two), but that would mean getting back on the 101, if you’re in to that sort of thing. There are brewery tour buses, so…

The Sonoma Coast State Beaches are nearby as well, and though the abalone season has been canceled, there are some awesome spots for tide pooling and a couple of the beaches (Salmon Creek for instance) are great for body surfing and swimming (and some are definitely NOT good for getting in the water (like Goat Rock), but we can go over that at a later date).

Another state park nearby is Armstrong Redwoods Reserve which is beautiful and full of a variety of easy to moderate hikes.

There is kayaking on the River, canoeing, too. There are a couple of sandy beaches nearby, too. We are looking at a couple of places with sunny decks and spots to hang out.

I will be doing some “research” on restaurants in the area, so that we can have a dinner out at someplace memorable. I was thinking about a seafood night, since we will be reasonably close to some great sources (oysters, salmon, and on and on), though that’s nowhere near to being written in stone.

And, speaking of Stone, there will be ample opportunities for birding
