2019 BRUIN REUNION
TAOS, New Mexico

July 31 to Aug. 4 2019

The address of the Base Camp / Mother Ship is #7 Urraca Rd. El Prado, New Mexico 87571, A.K.A. Mountain View

KO and John, Bra and Gee’s are here.
(This address is not on Google Maps so check the “2019 Where We Are In Taos” link on right side bar. OHO)
The Gee’s are driving in to Taos.

Appel, Toe, and Mark and Debra Scofield are in Hale de Taos.

Appelman and I have the following plan:

Wed 7/31 fly LAX to ABQ SWA #0860 leaves 8:30am arrives at 11:30am.  We will rent a car and drive to Santa Fe.  We will spend the day and night in Santa Fe (we have hotel reservations in Santa Fe (if Bob wants to join us I am sure we can work out sharing a room – we have two rooms reserved).  We will drive up to Taos sometime late morning/early afternoon on Thursday.  We are staying in the condo until Tuesday 8/6.  We will drive to Alb and we have a flight Thursday night SWA flt#0643 leaving 7:55pm and arriving in LA at 9:00pm.  We most likely will have a spare bed and our condo is next door to the Base Camp.  I haven’t confirmed with Mark, Deborah or Appleman but I am sure they would be overjoyed to have Bob stay with us.  Actually it would be a privilege to have him stay with us.

Chucky

The Leos’s are in Casa Panorama.

Otto and Alyson are in Casa Romantica.
We arrive in Albuquerque Wednesday, July 31, at 10:40AM on Delta from LAX. We’ll have a Nissan Versa rental car, driving to Taos, until we leave on Sunday Aug. 4.

Stone and (hopefully) Delbo are at 13 West Road, Apt 3, El Prado. Jul 31- Aug 4 .

Bro is coming…

It’s still early, more details to come…

Hey Bruins,

John and I look forward to the Taos reunion Aug 31-Aug 4, with some extending their trip on either end. Otto has posted the base camp location and some basic information on the website https://bruinreunion.com/.

Here’s the attendee list I have so far:
Bob Raines
Bob Routt (flying solo)
Chuck
Jim
Mark & Antoinette
Mark and Debra
Otto & Alyson
Scott & Karen
Paul & Adele (?)

Who else is in?

Group meals – Scott has thoughtfully planned themed menus for the nights of Aug 1-3 – Remembering Anthony Bourdain in New Mexico . These dinners will be at base camp. We remind everyone of food needed to supplement what base camp is providing.

Landmark Sites – We could choose one or two of these places that are noteworthy for their natural beauty, their compelling history, or their uniqueness.

The Arts and Culture – Taos is art, and a massively eclectic cultural mecca. We may want to tour some galleries and museums.

Restaurants – I will get a list of my favorites to Otto for the website.

Here are a couple of terrific hikes suggestions, but remember you’re at altitude (Taos – 6,969 ft). :

Williams Lake is an alpine lake located high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains below Wheeler Peak in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of Carson National Forest. The trail head is accessed from Taos Ski Valley – 2 miles one way, about 900 ft vertical gain starting at 10,200 ft.
Devisadero Trail – Devisadero means a “lookout” point or place. The peak had once been used by the Taos Pueblo Indians to stand guard against the Apaches who would come down Taos Canyon to raid the pueblo. Views of the Taos Plateau abound. It can be one way to the peak or a loop, about 5 mi – 7,190-8,304 ft
John would love to lead a hike up to Williams Lake, a place that is very, very dear to him.

To quote Bra, “While I might be able to give you advice on hiking,(art galleries, and restaurants), I have no idea about the local golf courses, Taos Country Club and Valle Escondido. Who wants to take charge of this?

Wine Touring – I haven’t done it myself, but here are three wineries to consider. They are enroute from Albuquerque or while in Taos:
Black Mesa Winery, in Velarde, 31 m south of Taos, has a tasting room in Taos. They make cider. They have private tastings for $89.
Vivac Winery is located on the corner of Hwy 68 and Hwy 75, near Dixon, 45 miles North of Santa Fe & 25 miles South of Taos
La Chiripada is located on Hwy 75, within the town of Dixon, 50 miles north of Santa Fe and 25 miles south of Taos. They have a Tasting Room in Taos.

Craft Beer – What’s Brewing in Taos

Taos Pride Parade and Festival (Aug 1-3) honors the lives and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people everywhere. I went last year. What a scene.

Birding – I would love to go out with Paul to learn a bit about photographing birds. Paul tells me there aren’t many great locations in the area, and from what I can tell it’s true, especially in August. It may have something to do with the altitude and dryness. Audubon New Mexico suggests places between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. so we could plan a pre- or post- reunion excursion for this purpose.
